Transit Equity Day

February 4 (Rosa Parks‘s birthday) is Transit Equity Day. Transit Equity Day is an opportunity to reflect on the needs of our transportation system and take action for safe, convenient, dignifying, and equitable bus rides for all. One way to do this is to ensure bus riders have a safe and comfortable place to wait.

Transit Equity Day is the perfect time to get moving and sponsor a bus stop bench for your neighborhood or business!

From January 23 to 28, you can place an order for a Build-A-Bench Kit ($40), a Pre-Built Public Bus Bench ($75), or a Private Bench for your business, park, church, or school ($100).

Join us on February 4th, 4 – 6:30 PM at Cottage Home Community Park to pick up your bench or kit, then set up your finished bench at a bus stop that needs it!

Benches are 51″ wide, 23″ deep, and 33″ tall.

Even better, you can use your new bench as inspiration for your People We Meet on the Bus Vol. 2 submission. All proceeds from benches go to the Central Indiana Cycling Transit Advocacy Committee, thanks to the generous support of Indy Bench Mench.

If you’d like to order a bench but aren’t available during the pickup time, please contact us and we can see if an accommodation is possible. You can also make a donation to place a bench at a location requested by a community member.

(And access the bench-building instructions here!)

P.S. Want to encourage businesses or groups in your neighborhood to sponsor a bench? Here’s a script you can use to connect with them!
